India Celebrates National Education Day on the Eve of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad Birthday on November 11

The Birth Anniversary of India's First Education Minister Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad was celebrated was celebrated across the nation as National Education Day on November 11. Maulana Abdul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin was the First Education Minister of Independent India. He served as Education Minister of India from 1947 to 1948.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development / The Ministry of Education on September 11 2008 announced to recall the contribution to the cause of Indian Education by Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad's Birthday as National Education Day.

Born in Mecca,Saudi Arabia in 1888, Azad's family was relocated to Calcutta to provide him a better education. He got quality education in Calcutta and it reflects in his work culture as a Journalist and also as a poet. In 1912, Azad had started publishing a weekly called Al-Hilal to criticize the British Policies.After it was banned he started weekly Al-Bagah following which the British Government banned him under the Defence of India Regulations in 1916.

Azad has strongly advocated Women Education. In 1949 In the Central Assembly Azad elucidated the importance of imparting instructions in modern sciences and knowledge along with the women education for advancement of the society. Azad is the responsible person for shaping the modern education system in India. The First IIT,IISC, School of Planning and Architecture , University Grants Commission were established in India under his Tenure. The Most prominent,cultural, literary Academies were also built including Lalit Kala Academy, Sangeet Natak Academy,Sahitya Academy and Indian Council for Cultural relations.
