Vice President Mr M.Venkaiah Naidu at Institute of Mathematical Science (IMSc) Chennai,called for bridging the gender divide in STEM related courses in the country.He spoke about various trends in STEM and how data science helps in tapping the right potential for job creation. STEM Stands for Science,Technology,Engineering and Math related courses and careers. He also shared that women enrollment was increased from 8% to 20% at present. He said that India produces the highest percentage of STEM graduates in the world.

He appreciated the Department of Science and Technology's Initiative towards Women Scientists Program that encourages women to take up Careers in Mathematics and Science. Women Scientists are our role models for girls in the Science field. We need to think beyond the Traditional Engineering curriculum by learning new skill sets that industry demands so as to equip young graduates for future.
He wanted Technical Courses to be offered in regional languages also that will benefit large number of students. He also stressed the importance of making science education available to students in their local languages. It will help students in understanding the subject better. In the mean time students should learn as many languages as possible but give high prominence to the mother tongue.
Venkaiah Naidu also remembered the great Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan and his invaluable contribution that increased India's rich legacy in the Mathematics subject. It was important to find and nurture the talent in the children. He feels confident about the future of the nation because of the tremendous efforts being put by our scientists and young researchers. The students activities in schools should include yoga, Gardening and social work for overall growth and development.
He asked Educators to implement creative methods and hands-on activities that helps children friends with numbers. In order to achieve this New Education policy should be fully utilized. The strong foundational STEM must be complemented by encouraging children to take up careers in the field of Science. In order to strengthen STEM research Academic institutes need to partner with the private sector.
He also appreciated the efforts of IMSc in furthering quality fundamental research of the mega-science project and its involvement in India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO). He expressed his confidence that this project will elevate India's global position as leader in scientific research. He also inaugurated the new residential wing of the IMSc at DAE Nodal Centre at Chennai.
